Baby steps: my first "baby" is here! :) [Dec. 24th, 2008|08:41 am]

[Feeling |incredulous/psyched]

Well folks, at long last I have a major milestone toward this goal:

My new 5-song EP Transition arrived on our doorstop yesterday! I don’t know how much 1000 discs weighs in at, but the stork sure delivered a welcome holiday gift. ;-)

Putting together a pre-release email/web announcement today amidst some last-minute gift wrapping and even a little cooking for tomorrow’s seasonal festivities at our friends’ place … It’s an exciting, festive time around here!

Hope all is well with everyone on here and wishing you lots of fulfillment in the new year with achieving whatever goals you set your heart and mind to! :)

Almost done with the EP! [Nov. 8th, 2008|10:44 am]

Well, I’m finally back with another recording update –€“ hopefully those of you who have been following along are still there and still at least vaguely interested! ;-) I’ll kick this entry off with a bit of advice for those of you following this goal on 43 Things looking for tips from others going through the recording process:

Feel free to set targets for timing, album length, etc. but do not expect to always (if ever) meet them, particularly on your first go ‘round. It is incredibly difficult to extrapolate release timing when you are scheduling sessions here and there over the course of several months or a year, as likely your song selection will evolve, and perhaps even more compelling new material will emerge and threaten to take over other songs that were in the queue … and so now you know a bit of where I’m headed with this entry and its title. ;-)

Okay, so here’s the update:
  • by end of July, had finished tracking (recording) 4 songs at the amazing studio over the course of about a month (for those interested, probably spent 5 hours per song total – almost 3 each to track and just over 2 to mix, give or take)
  • got a partial scholarship to WOMAD Summer School to study songwriting and African music with pros and peers in the UK and suddenly off we went … this is relevant to the update for two reasons: 1. gone for almost 3 weeks, b. emerged from said 3 weeks rather broke (thanks, weak dollar!), and iii. emerged from said workshop with new material that, as predicted above, moved in for the kill in terms of song selection for the album
  • following typical post-travel illness/exhaustion/recovery period, listened back to everything we had recorded, including rough demos, then made more rough demos of über-new stuff and older stuff we had picked out that we re-arranged a little/worked with tempo on, etc.
  • early September, had a good production meeting with the studio folks, in which it was determined that the best thing to do is get the pre-release EP out there, then move ahead with the album taking our time to flesh out the best of the new stuff and cull the absolute best out of all the stuff I’ve been writing for years and years and years …
  • added violin and cello to the last song we’d recorded, which was feeling like it still needed something after the piano and vocals were done –€“ collectively got very excited about the result and mixed it

Finally, we arrive at our current status: typing this update as we arrive in the studio parking lot to put final mixing touches on the remaining songs!

So, we’re getting very close to actually having something in-hand that I hope moves you and connects with your life in some way. And it’s looking like the full album will be out sometime in ‘09 – but I don’t wanna make any promises. ;-)

Meanwhile, I released the first two preliminary tracks for download online, you can check them out at www.melissaaxel.com

Thanks as always for listening, much love! :)

Success with this goal starts today. [Oct. 2nd, 2007|05:09 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , ]
[Feeling |determined]

Goals have been given a skim, all “cause-related” goals have been removed in preparation for more specific, current, really-for-me goal-setting. It is a good start to a long, hopefully rewarding process of energy refocusing for me. Input is welcome, bearing in mind that the wise input “get quiet and listen to yourself” supercedes all outside input… but I would still like to hear the gut instincts of those who care and have a sense about me. Much love to everyone who has cheered and commented while I’ve been off 43 things (and LJ), it has not gone unnoticed and is very much appreciated. =)

Our cat was front-paw declawed when we adopted her... [Oct. 2nd, 2007|03:38 pm]

and I shudder to think what she went through. But thankfully she seems fine, nips a little when she needs to let you know you’re holding her uncomfortably or sometimes the occasional “love bite” but mostly she is a sweet and super loving licker.

That said, I’m doing a big “goal spring cleaning” (yes, in the fall) and removing all “causes” from the list for now while I determine and focus in on my specific, current to-do list. I am glad to have participated in this goal to make others more aware that declawing is not good.

We swam our butts off on the honeymoon [Oct. 2nd, 2007|03:21 pm]

so I think I can actually check this one off for now. I would still like to swim regularly, but now that we’re heading into winter I’m not sure how much of a priority I want to make it. I don’t usually enjoy swimming in indoor lap pools, which is pretty much what’s available here at various gyms or recreation centers. So maybe I’ll revisit this after the snow has come and gone. Meanwhile, I think this winter is the time to try tubing and maybe even a couple ski lessons (finally, after living in Colorado a year and a half)!

Hi there,

Hope this finds you doing well! Brief little announcement in hopes of spreading the word...

I just want to let you know that applications are open for the Lovewell Institute for the Creative Arts summer programs, in which teenagers age 13 - 19 work together to create their own original musical theatre production in just 3 weeks - and this year spots are going really fast!

Anyone interested in music, theatre, writing, visual arts (including video and photography), tech, dance, comedy, directing, songwriting, etc. should definitely apply.

Applications are available at www.lovewell.org for both programs - in Sweden (in Linköping) and in Ft. Lauderdale (at Nova Southeastern University) - as well as for the junior program (age 8 - 12) in conjunction with Camp Nova.

For those who need a little financial assistance, there are scholarships available, so do apply.

Feel free to contact me with any questions you have or contact info [at] lovewell [dot] org =)

This just in from Delayed-reaction Central: 2007 Music Business Predictions [Mar. 21st, 2007|03:40 am]

[Listening to |Mei Ling the kitty purring in my lap]

Found the below link of 2007 music business predictions via music writer/editor Aaron Burgess's blog – via finding him through a LinkedIn network (LinkedIn is career connection city, just got into it pretty heavily after receiving yet another invite)...

I must say that I have stumbled across:

one of the most thoughtful and amusing pieces of music industry analysis I have come across in a very long time.

So I will. Erm, I did. There, I've said it.

Anyway, it was pretty exciting to see that someone else is out there saying many of the same things I have been harping on for the past 5-7 years! =)

The process began... [Mar. 10th, 2007|08:02 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , , , , ]
[Feeling |anticipatory]

on January 23rd, 2007. Recorded nine vocal/piano demos here at my place into my producer’s iMac (well, I guess the process technically began when he found me on MySpace back in August looking for an artist to work with for one of his projects in the CU Denver Recording Arts masters program)... anyway, we have the nine songs –€“ plus two more I had already mini-disced and many more alternate choices that have yet to be recorded, and now we need to sit down and determine instrumentation/arrangements (several really amazing musicians have agreed to volunteer their talents to the cause so far!), and I need to practice, practice, practice to get back into musical shape, especially vocally.

Some days, it is “all right there” and others, well… other days it sounds pretty much like I just haven’t made much time for making music in a long while. Mostly it’s editing this music mag, but it’s sort of made me gear up for yet another close look into what it is I really want to dedicate my life to career-wise. I don’t see life and career being separate, and that’s certainly true in the case of my work with growing this magazine, but… hmm, I don’t really feel like it’s any one thing I’m meant to do exclusively, and I wonder what path this music will take if it’s not “the one thing” I do. Maybe this is just the way it’s meant to be for me… the balancing act. Or maybe it’s just a question of each thing in its right place and time.

So, we’ll see. Looking forward to the next steps. =)

1. Put your iPod (or in my case, iTunes) on random and hit play (whole collection).
2. Post the first lines of the first fifteen songs, no matter how embarrassing.
3. People will guess.
4. As they get them right, add the title and artist, and strike them out.

Get to guessing! )

So, yeah... I had to skip ahead several times due to instrumental tracks, but this was a weird mix nonetheless. Over 13,000 tracks to choose from but it wasn't a super diverse batch...

While the pavilions of the Future World section have been in a state of (seemingly) almost constant transition since the ‘90s, World Showcase has remained remarkably unchanged – and it’s remarkably still entertaining. Perhaps it’s the ambience of each country “recreated” or, of course, there’s always the amazing restaurants… Whatever it is, I look forward to returning in May for a trip “around the world” at Epcot, probably my favorite Walt Disney World theme park. Maybe this time we’ll try to eat something in every country!

[Feeling | contemplative]
[Listening to |"Hide And Seek" - Imogen Heap - The Last Kiss Original Motion Picture Soundtrack]

by Tony Goldwyn

I had mixed feelings about this movie, even though all along I felt it was an important film to be made (and yes, I’m in that just-turned-thirty target market). I agree with a few viewers that there was a predictability about it that I really wasn’t expecting, given what I’d read on The Last Kiss website and what lead actor Zach Braff has shared on his blog.

No major spoilers here, just thoughts I wanted to share on the film - would love to see your impressions if you saw it, too. )

On an entirely separate note, while Zach had nothing to do with the writing or direction of this film, the soundtrack he put together for it is top notch and brings to light the emotional, pensive atmosphere that seemed to be the essence of making this film for all of the cast members. Since many of them were listening to much of this music while filming, that makes total sense – and when I think of the truly poignant moments of The Last Kiss (of which there were many, don’t misunderstand my overall reaction based on the points I chose to address above), they do mean more to me in the context of this music (as our own lives often take on more meaning in retrospect when paired with their own personal soundtracks). In any case, it’s wonderful to have someone in the public spotlight doing good for independent and emerging musical artists.

How I met Imogen Heap [Jul. 27th, 2006|02:31 pm]

[Listening to |"Hide And Seek" - Imogen Heap - Speak For Yourself]

Back in May, my sweetie and I went to see Imogen perform live in Boulder’s cozy but acoustically great Fox Theater. We stayed afterward to meet her…

Though she must have been exhausted from a very energetic and captivating performance (complete with encores) in which she personally recreated almost every note of her sonically-intensive edgy poptronica album Speak For Yourself using a variety of electronic gear and her gorgeous voice, she still made time to greet everyone who’d waited with a genuine smile and a hug.

I gave her a DVD of my stage production as a sort of thank you for her inspiration, and she wanted to know what it was all about and said she looked forward to watching it. I doubt she has any time to, but I thought that was very sweet.

in my iTunes, on my radio show, for my stage production, and now for this new music mag in Colorado.

From the feedback I’ve gotten, I think I have a pretty good ear for music placement and syncing with visuals and scenes, but I’m not sure I would enjoy “playing with the big boys” in terms of working with television (with whom I have an obviously conflicted relationship – or lack thereof) or jumping through hoops to work my way up the film ladder. BUT, I know I could do this well and make a difference in people’s lives by reaching them through music in this way…

It certainly can’t hurt to learn about how to get involved in music supervision. Hopefully, this goal can be a place to share ideas. =)

A tip I have about Joe's [Jul. 12th, 2006|06:24 am]
[Tags|, , , , , , , , , , , , ]

You can get more bang for your buck at Joe’s on the waterfront in Boston by ordering several of their great appetizers (I’d venture to say that, like quite a few restaurants, the apps are better than the main dishes). Some of my faves include the fried mozzarella (a big slab of it floating in yummy marinara sauce, not those junky sticks so many places fake it with), the seared tuna with sticky rice cake (yum!), and if you like the raw bar, go for the dozen blue point oysters – very refreshing!

Obviously the view will only apply during daytime, but at night it’s a pretty stroll along the wharf as well and not a far walk from the North End, where you can grab some Italian decadence from the infamous Mike’s Pastry if you’ve (hopefully) saved space for dessert.

The room upstairs is ideal for larger group dinners or other special occasions… we had a lot of fun at my Berklee graduation dinner there when it turned out that Leslie’s bachelorette party was seated not far away. Luckily, nothing too crazy went on, but we did get a laugh out of the t-shirt they made highlighting the “Top 10 reasons to Party with Leslie Tonight.” Number 8? “She loves to Salsa with strangers!”

Yummy Golden Dragon & Bubble Tea! [Jul. 12th, 2006|04:54 am]
[Tags|, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ]

My sweetie and I discovered this busy little local eatery while waiting for the infamous hourly Fung Wah Bus to take us to Boston dirt cheap. We quickly learned that we could enjoy some tasty snacks dirt cheap as well at Golden Dragon, just a short walk down the cross street where the bus would pick us up. I had a yummy fried fish and cheese sandwich (on croissant, go figure), and he enjoyed a ham and cheese wrapped inside soft bread. I also tried what appeared to be a more authentic chinese treat: a fried shrimp dumpling… not your typical dumpling mind you, but some juicy shrimp and chicken in light sauce wrapped in very gooey white soft dough but fried crispy on the outside. Top that off with one of the myriad drinks such as bubble tea and you’ll be all set for a nice four hour bus ride too! I chose a mango milk drink with small clear tapicoa, but I have to say I prefer our recent discovery: passion fruit snow bubble tea (with the bigger, dark chewy boba pearls) from our local Lollicup.

Overall, it was a great little snack stopover in Chinatown!

The first time I went to The Laughing Goat [Jul. 10th, 2006|05:25 am]

I had just moved to Colorado and was attending a production meeting for the Boulder International Fringe Festival a few doors down. I popped in to check out the piano since I’d just found out that all of us music acts were likely to be performing there during the Fringe.

As I plunked out a little melody, exclaiming aloud my joy at finding the piano in tune, a nearby couple seated at a table also on-stage asked what I was up to. I told them that I would be playing there for my first Colorado gig in August and I just had to test out the keys. They were very excited for me and took down my website.

Already I was smitten with Colorado, so I can’t say I was shocked at the supportiveness so untypical of my previous locale, but… it was just a really good feeling to have their encouragement.

I’m excited to go back and perform at the Goat on August 18th – won’t you join me?

[Listening to |"Into The West" - Annie Lennox - Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King</i]

From over a hundred souls arises the sound,
made on hand-crafted instruments,
through which emanates a song
that mere hands could never craft.

The music floats above them,
coalescing into a near-invisible cocoon
of swirling iridescent light
into which our souls, too,
float,
are enveloped,
merge with its essence
and become whole.

During each long pause,
we create our response with our hands,
and remember what it is
to experience divinity within the body -
what it is
to be
human.

Well, something's lost and something's gained
In living every day

Oh, I've looked at life from both sides now,
From win and lose and still, somehow
It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all."

At the moment my myspace Top 8 (music profile) is featuring a selection of awesome female music artists who I love and have been spinning on my radio show The Authentic Life... here are some quick thoughts on why:

Saw the amazing Regina Spektor in Boulder last week - my first concert here in Colorado - and was very impressed (not surprisingly) with both her performance and authenticity in person! Here's my one-line review of the show: Piano chops flawless voice witty humor genuine joy = AWESOME!

Saw Imogen Heap on Monday in Boulder also (2nd Colorado concert, yay!) - adore her solo album, adore Frou Frou, enjoyed many earlier elements of her creative development (solo stuff released abroad)... the show by all accounts was uniquely beautiful: from the techno-savvy presentation of the songs, to the flora-and-lights keyboard and stage decor, to Imogen's brief on-stage banter and personal warmth upon greeting one-to-one... a special performance by an outstandingly talented artist.

India.Arie's new album (see "currently listening") is due out next month, and if you haven't already, it's time to hop on the bandwagon. Saw her perform in Florida back in December, and she's just a breathtaking soul. Another artist who is so genuine both in who she is and what she creates that it's a joy to be part of the magic - and she really does make you feel like a part of something truly special when she performs. Creating a song based on one phrase from an audience member, then singing it again during an improv with her mother on stage = priceless connection for all.

More than just a token jazz artist for this short list, Lizz Wright brings her unique, rich voice to many different types of music and makes each song her own. There are tracks on both of the albums I have of hers that I simply couldn't live without ("Without You" for one, "A Taste Of Honey" like you've never heard it before, and "Stop" - recognize this Madonna song?) Soothing and stirring at the same time.

You may have heard Norwegian artist Kate Havnevik's compelling voice on the gorgeous "Travel In Time" track she co-wrote with Carmen Rizzo for his acclaimed 2005 release The Lost Art Of The Idle Moment... or you may have heard her on my personal profile if you know me "in real life" (her song "Unlike Me" plays when you load me up)... Either way, Kate's new solo album is already available on iTunes and I highly recommend it.

Speaking of Scandinavian artists, there are two more for you... Norwegian-born but based in Sweden, Ane Brun writes some of the most beautiful acoustic guitar and raspy-voiced folkish almost-country music I've heard (and you know I'm picky). I had the pleasure of meeting her in early 2005 through another great Swedish artist and indie label owner from The Tiny who invited me to Ane's CD release party in Stockholm when I emailed looking for "music things to do." Very glad I did. Now Ane's touring stateside following a U.S. debut in New York and at the infamous SXSW Music Festival in Austin - I look forward to seeing her here in Boulder later this month!

Sweden's Anna Ternheim is a well-known artist in her home country, and as soon as I get my hands back on a radio station mixer with a new show in Colorado, I will do my best to see to it that you get a good dose of her music here as well. I'm mostly known for supporting independent artists, but some of the ones who've gone on to "major status" continue to deserve our support even if we have to send folded up twenty dollar bills inside birthday cards to their managers to get money to them directly instead of their label taking 80 (Bad Melissa! Down, soapbox, down!) Back to the music: a Swedish reporter remarked that Anna's voice and songs were "so beautiful it makes you cry." That about says it for me.

The voice of Australian-born Sia (Furler) should not be unknown to you either... her vocals have graced several tracks on each of Zero 7's last two albums. While I don't follow mainstream music, I can say that I've heard the infamous track "Destiny" on the airwaves while shopping in New York's H&M, so I know it's not just me thinking that was a winner. Sia's album Colour The Small One features some amazing solo work, with her song "Breathe Me" landing a spot on the Six Feet Under Vol. 2 soundtrack and a collaboration with Beck that showcases not only her soft, stunning voice but her thoughtful writing as well.

I hope you've enjoyed these brief introductions to a group of artists who deserve some serious attention... comments are more than welcome, I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Central meeting place for UF College of Business students [May. 2nd, 2006|08:54 pm]

For a few years, I was passing through this little area between several of the University of Florida business school buildings at least several times daily, so named for its placement between 3 of the main buildings in which classes are held. It’s the courtyard area where all of the business student organizations recruit at the beginning of each semester, where believe it or not, artsy little me got lured into the strange-yet-helpful entity known as a Professional Business Fraternity. Oddly enough, the fraternity was Delta Sigma Pi, the (Greek) first letter of course being the triangle-shaped Delta which represents “change” – supposedly chosen to imply the evolutionary process which would occur in us (from goofy, oft-drunk college kids to poker-faced, oft-drunk upper-level college kids in suits). Fun! Ironic! Potential fodder for quite the psychological study, I’m sure… ;-)

Even more ironic, some of my experiences with Deltasig have helped me not only with career preparation but in my music endeavors as well. Their magazine ended up doing an interesting story on four of us who had sort of “out of the box” type jobs, and just recently, one of my old friends from the group donated some awesome DVD/CD labels for my graduate production, The Human Adventure.

Just the other day I was half-complaining that I had not gone to college somewhere artsy like Boulder, which I had actually dreamed about as a kid. But thinking back to the days hanging out in the Triangle puts me in kind of a nostalgic mood, and remembering some of my experiences at University of Florida – walking around the campus and the places I frequented in town – I definitely wouldn’t change anything. After all, “they” are right when “they” say, “If you had done even one thing differently, you wouldn’t be who or where you are today.” And I’m very happy with today.
