Hi there,
Hope this finds you doing well! Brief little announcement in hopes of spreading the word...
I just want to let you know that applications are open for the Lovewell Institute for the Creative Arts summer programs, in which teenagers age 13 - 19 work together to create their own original musical theatre production in just 3 weeks - and this year spots are going really fast!
(for those of you wondering, I volunteered at the one in Sweden in 2004)
Anyone interested in music, theatre, writing, visual arts (including video and photography), tech, dance, comedy, directing, songwriting, etc. should definitely apply.
Applications are available at www.lovewell.org for both programs - in Sweden (in Linköping) and in Ft. Lauderdale (at Nova Southeastern University) - as well as for the junior program (age 8 - 12) in conjunction with Camp Nova.
For those who need a little financial assistance, there are scholarships available, so do apply.
Feel free to contact me with any questions you have or contact info [at] lovewell [dot] org =) |

I had mixed feelings about this movie, even though all along I felt it was an important film to be made (and yes, I’m in that just-turned-thirty target market). I agree with a few viewers that there was a predictability about it that I really wasn’t expecting, given what I’d read on The Last Kiss website and what lead actor Zach Braff has shared on his blog. ( No major spoilers here, just thoughts I wanted to share on the film
- would love to see your impressions if you saw it, too. )On an entirely separate note, while Zach had nothing to do with the writing or direction of this film, the soundtrack he put together for it is top notch and brings to light the emotional, pensive atmosphere that seemed to be the essence of making this film for all of the cast members. Since many of them were listening to much of this music while filming, that makes total sense – and when I think of the truly poignant moments of The Last Kiss (of which there were many, don’t misunderstand my overall reaction based on the points I chose to address above), they do mean more to me in the context of this music (as our own lives often take on more meaning in retrospect when paired with their own personal soundtracks). In any case, it’s wonderful to have someone in the public spotlight doing good for independent and emerging musical artists. |

From over a hundred souls arises the sound, made on hand-crafted instruments, through which emanates a song that mere hands could never craft.
The music floats above them, coalescing into a near-invisible cocoon of swirling iridescent light into which our souls, too, float, are enveloped, merge with its essence and become whole.
During each long pause, we create our response with our hands, and remember what it is to experience divinity within the body - what it is to be human.

Oh, but now, old friends - they're acting strange And they shake their heads and they tell me that I've changed Well, something's lost and something's gained In living every day
Oh, I've looked at life from both sides now, From win and lose and still, somehow It's life's illusions I recall I really don't know life at all."

| Still have to look for a few items... |
[Mar. 16th, 2006|12:44 am] |
but the bulk of the switch is done, from household cleaners to personal cleansers... The items I haven’t needed to replace yet include toilet bowl cleaner and drain-un-clogger, and I wasn’t that happy with the taste of the natural toothpaste I picked so I will try another. Not sure if it’s the flavor I selected or if I should try a different brand, will do the latter first… if anyone has any favorite products, feel free to recommend! I am not that big on citrus-y or otherwise food-y smelling cleansers though… I like oceany and other light “clean scents” or even scent-free stuff. |

This is perhaps THE single most brilliant book I have read in I don’t know how long! It just rocked me to the core, especially hearing bits of what people suddenly remember from their youth and how it affects how they do or don’t connect with others as adults. I noticed that the YOU in the title is highlighted, which is kind of interesting, since when people say this sort of trite phrase, they seem to stress the “through” more, like “how can I get THROUGH to you, for #$%@’s sake?” But stressing YOU makes me think it’s like “how can I safely reach the REAL YOU” or something. Anyway, this is down-to-earth writing by a very knowledgeable and spiritually-aware expert psychologist who has done his homework on the modern psyches of both men and women and takes a really accessible sort of evolutionary approach to everyday connection. He’s also at times funny and poetic, sometimes both – makes for an enjoyable read as well as a potent presentation of piercing evolutionary human theory. |

The circumstances under which I would, might, have, or might have chosen to have an abortion are nobody's business but mine and those I choose to tell. They are not the business of any government. I do not accept the proposition that either the state or my sexual partner(s) should have any say over when and if I choose to bear a child. I do not accept any sovereignty over my body and my reproductive organs but my own. If faced with the situation, I will do everything feasible to help women and girls I know exercise their rights to safely terminate a pregnancy if they so choose. When a state treats women and girls as chattel, it is they that commit a crime.

Another second-round viewing for this film as well as its predecessor... first viewing was on the big screen – by myself – which I thoroughly enjoyed, though I bawled at the end. Hopefully that doesn’t give anything away. ;-) On this last viewing, just a few days after re-watching the aforementioned predecessor, I truly savored it, especially since I got to see it with two dear ones who were viewing both films for the first time. “Just in time…” as Nina Simone would sing. =)

I watched this movie for the second time last month, many years after it first came out, and enjoyed it even more this time than I did upon first viewing. Maybe it’s because I’m in that nearly-thiry age range and the connection between this one and its follow-up 9 years later (in “real life” as well as in the film) seems that much more poignant when viewed from the threshold of “adult life”... or maybe it’s just one of those films that I’ll always enjoy. Whatever the case, it’s a thinker but also a funny little charmer – definitely my kind of film. |

My two oldest friends' mom is sick, I am on my way to visit her in the hospital... I'd like to dedicate this wonderful poem I found to her, and to my love. Let us use the "time" we have wisely, and not falter in the crossroads. As another dear friend and mentor says in his musical opus, Nefertiti, one moment can change it all.
little wishes by skygypsy
may there be time for us to do all we yearn to
may we ignore our doubts and be bold!
may our stories always point back to our hearts
may we create our own magic and experience unimaginable joy
may we discover the gifts of discordance and harmony
may we embrace and evolve our humanity to express our universal divinity
and dance dance dance to our graves having known freedom joy and love in full technicolor glory! |

| mostly meat-free for me... |
[Jan. 17th, 2006|03:13 am] |
I still love the seafood I must say, and I do have the occasional chicken or turkey dish from time to time, but I have been skipping the red meat/pork/other game since 1997 – and I must agree with other peeps’ entries about feeling better on many levels and reduced cravings for sugar, junk food, salt, etc. Meat-free is definitely the healthier way to go (not to mention healthier for the aminals!), and there is much creative non-meat yummyness out there awaiting discovery. Drinking lots of yummy natural juices and of course water – and skipping the milk and caffeinated sodas – also helps keep me (and my taste buds) feeling spiffy. In a related aside, I love edamame. |

Head count of everyone who was at my last performance, during which I played 3 of my original songs: Not to mention the rest of the wonderful audience, the Nova Singers (many of whom sang in the show), and quite a few very enthusiastic supporters from my university. That’s a lot of loved ones in one performing arts center – just missing some key peeps from out of town, but thankfully we will have a DVD of the show soon to share with them. Can’t speak for all in terms of having “them love it,” but between the positive feedback and what the above loved ones have told me in person, I think it’s safe to check this goal off!

[Dec. 8th, 2005|07:35 am] |
I’ve always said that if my music or art or writing or anything I did or said touched just one person, that would be more than enough. After my latest creative project, I received so many thanks and comments to this effect (despite the requisite mixed feedback as well of course), that I feel I need to put my money where my mouth is and… chew it. Just kidding, I mean check this off. Of course, this is one of those entries that I will want to do again and again and again. =) |
|
|

[Dec. 4th, 2005|03:28 pm] |
Hats off to me for becoming less enraged on a regular basis! I am well on my way to not giving a shit about anything not worth giving a shit about. Much progress in the last 6 months on this front, and it’s time to check this off (“we’ll continue to monitor your progress, Ms. Axel, but it’s safe to say you’re out of the dark now”) to make room for other worthy goals. =) |

| Spirituality vs. Religion |
[Nov. 25th, 2005|01:39 pm] |
reposting...
----------------- Bulletin Message ----------------- From: ALAN Date: Nov 25, 2005 1:13 PM
SPIRITUALITY SAYS THAT GOD IS WITHIN US AND THAT WE DON'T NEED ANYONE ELSE TO MAKE THAT DIVINE CONNECTION FOR US.
RELIGION SAYS THAT WE ARE SEPARATED FROM GOD AND THAT WE NEED "THEM" TO MAKE THAT DIVINE CONNECTION.
SPIRITUALITY SAYS THAT WE ARE FREE TO MAKE CHOICES ON OUR OWN AND THAT WE MUST TAKE PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY FOR OUR ACTIONS.
RELIGION SAYS WE MUST MAKE THEIR CHOICES AND ACT THEIR WAY.
THE THEME OF SPIRITUALITY IS UNCONDITIONAL LOVE.
THE THEME OF RELIGION IS FEAR AND GUILT.
SPIRITUALITY DOES NOT REQUIRE US TO MAKE DONATIONS.
RELIGION HAS BECOME BIG BUSINESS.
SPIRITUALITY SAYS THERE IS NO HELL, NO JUDGEMENT, NO ANGRY GOD... THAT WE ARE LOVED UNCONDITIONALLY.
RELIGION SAYS THERE IS A HELL, GOD GETS ANGRY AND JUDGES US... THEREFORE, WE ARE NOT LOVED UNCONDITIONALLY.
SPIRITUALITY SAYS WE ARE FREE TO CHOOSE OUR OWN PATH TO GOD.
RELIGION COMMANDS US TO DO IT THEIR WAY.
SPIRITUALITY SAYS WE GO TO GOD TO LIGHTEN OUR BURDEN.
RELIGION HAS TAUGHT US TO FEAR THEIR GOD
SPIRITUALITY SAYS WE SHOULD NOT BE ASHAMED OF OUR SEXUALITY... THAT IT SHOULD BE A SACRED CELEBRATION OF LOVE
RELIGION HAS TAUGHT US TO FEEL ASHAMED, GUILTY AND DIRTY ABOUT OUR SEXUALITY
SPIRITUALITY TEACHES US TO HONOR AND RESPECT MOTHER EARTH
RELIGION HAS TOLD US TO "BE THOU FRUITFUL, MULTIPLY AND SUBDUE THE EARTH" I REPEAT... "SUBDUE THE EARTH"
SPIRITUALITY REMINDS US THAT WE ARE ONE WITH GOD AND ONE WITH EACH OTHER
RELIGION TEACHES DISUNITY AND SEPARATION WHICH IS THE OPPOSITE OF GOD
SPIRITUALITY SAYS GOD IS WITHIN
RELIGION SAYS HE IS IN HEAVEN AND THAT "THEY" ARE THE ONLY INTERMEDIARIES FOR US
SPIRITUALITY SAYS WE ARE BORN IN INNOCENCE AND PURITY
RELIGION SAYS WE ARE BORN WITH SIN
SPIRITUALITY TEACHES THAT WE ARE ON A LONG SPIRITUAL ADVENTURE AND JOURNEY WHICH WILL ULTIMATELY END BY REUNITING WITH OUR SOURCE
RELIGION SAYS WE'VE GOT ONE LIFE TO GET IT ALL RIGHT AND THERE IS NOTHING BUT HEAVEN OR HELL AFTER THAT
SPIRITUALITY SAYS WE ARE FREE TO EXPRESS
RELIGION GAVE US THE DREADED INQUISITION
SPIRITUALITY TEACHES UNCONDITIONAL LOVE FOR ALL
RELIGION GAVE US THE CRUSADES IN WHICH MANY WERE KILLED AND SLAUGHTERED IN THE NAME OF GOD
SPIRITUALITY TEACHES THAT WE SHOULD LOVE ONE ANOTHER UNCONDITIONALLY AND ALWAYS HONOR THE RIGHTS AND CHOICES OF OTHERS
RELIGION TREATED NATIVE AMERICANS, THE MAYANS AND OTHER INDIGENOUS CULTURES AS SAVAGE PRIMITIVES WHO "MUST BE SAVED"
SPIRITUALITY TEACHES PEACE AND HARMONY
RELIGION HAS CAUSED MORE WARS AND MORE KILLING THAN ANY OTHER REASON
SPIRITUALITY SAYS RESPECT ALL LIVING THINGS
I NEVER ONCE HEARD ANY RELIGION SAY STOP SLAUGHTERING MILLIONS OF TREES EVERY YEAR FOR CHRIST'S BIRTHDAY
SPIRITUALITY TEACHES US TO HAVE FAITH IN OURSELVES
RELIGION TEACHES US TO HAVE FAITH IN THEM
SPIRITUALITY SAYS WE HAVE ALL THE ANSWERS... THAT WE CAN FIND THEM BY "GOING WITHIN"
RELIGION TEACHES US THAT IT HAS ALL THE ANSWERS AND ONLY ITS ANSWERS ARE THE RIGHT ONES
SPIRITUALITY TEACHES US TO SEARCH FOR THE UNIVERSAL TRUTHS AND OUR HEARTS WILL TELL US WHEN WE HAVE FOUND THEM
RELIGION TEACHES WE HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO ACCEPT THEIR VERSION OF THE TRUTH
WHICH ONE FEELS BETTER TO YOU? SPIRITUALITY OR RELIGION?
GO TO YOUR HEART FOR THE ANSWER IT WILL NEVER LIE TO YOU

( Which society has made the better choice? )
American conservatives despise European welfare states like France. Yet many of them stress the importance of "family values." And whatever else you may say about French economic policies, they seem extremely supportive of the family as an institution. Senator Rick Santorum, are you reading this?

wow. more time for… everything! much less tension and stress, much less of that antsy feeling that “I am getting bored and must find stimulation” and also, less irritation at the constant commercial barrage and general idiocy of what is being broadcast as “truth” or even blatant disempowering propaganda. now that box is exactly what it is: a box. it plays movies when I want it to, the ones I want to see… and that’s about it. =) |

| mmm... my favorite thing |
[Jul. 8th, 2005|12:54 am] |
I’ve kissed a few someones… not too few and not too many, but nevertheless, I can never get enough kissing! The ultimate icing for just about any cake, and depending on the mood you’re in, it can even be the cake. Sad, happy, angry, lonely, aroused, aloof, silly, supportive – kissing is great for all emotional occasions and for bringing the feeling out in ones that momentarily lack it.
Hey, you’re not going to live forever – and when you’re done, you won’t be fondly adding up the moments you spent watching one more episode of [insert addictive syndicated TV program here] instead of in liplocked bliss with your honey or sending kiddies off to sleep with the butterfly kisses… So give someone a smooch today, right now if you have the opportunity! You’ll be glad you did. ;-) |

...is accepting people (and yourself) as is.
It has taken me a long time to learn that everyone is on their own journey of evolution, so what you see on the surface (or even below it) may be deceiving or simply more complex than your interpretations have a right to summarize… and also, there is the importance of living in the moment.
So, when you combine these realizations, you’re left with the stunning idea that living happily is about appreciating what and who is around you at any given point in time. No dwelling, no judging, no wishing any elements were any different than they are right NOW. Just acceptance and appreciation, either for the joy you feel at your observations or the challenge they bring which helps you to grow and remain curious and questioning.
So in honor of stopping judgment, I give you this song courtesy of The Original Sesame Street Lyrics Archive:

Now reading: The Hero Within: Six Archetypes We Live By (Carol S. Pearson) There is also a newer book by this author called Awakening the Heroes Within (I think) that has 12 archetypes. I read an excerpt from that and it has some amazing things to say about human relationships and how timeless concepts manifest themselves in our seemingly modern “mythology-free” society. UPDATE: almost done with The Hero Within, it’s REALLY GOOD!! =)
Just finished: How Can I Get Through To YOU? (Terrence Real) Oh. My. God.
Another great one is My Lover, Myself by Daniel Kantor, about how our own childhood myths about love and our roles affect us throughout life until we decode them and embrace the mythology of our personal identity through which we relate to others. Amazing book. |
